Prophylaxis Cleanings

Periodontal disease is a chronic disease and cannot be completely cured but can be prevented. Prophylaxis is one of the most effective tools to prevent its destructive progress.
A dental prophylaxis is a professional dental cleaning procedure that thoroughly cleans all of your teeth. Professional dental cleanings are an excellent way to help keep your oral health in good condition, and prevent the formation of periodontal (gum) disease.

Your teeth will be cleaned with special tools to remove calculus (tartar), which can’t be removed by brushing alone. Without regular professional dental cleaning visits, calculus (tartar) can build up and start to form beneath the gum line. This can eventually lead to having periodontal (gum) disease, which if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Studies also have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has been linked to heart disease stroke, and worsening glycemic control in type 2 diabeties mellitus.

Also, prophylaxis visit is more than just a dental cleaning. During the routine exam, several evaluations are used to improve the health of your teeth. First, we will take your dental X-rays and Dr. Cook will review and check for any signs of dental problems with a thorough oral exam. Next, comes the removal of deposits from your teeth with hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler. As the final step of professional dental cleaning, your teeth will be polished to give you a beautiful smile.

Your teeth may feel slightly more sensitive after prophylaxis. The reason for this is that plaque and calculus (tartar) coat the surface of your teeth filling microscoptic openings in your tooth roots. When this debris is removed the tooth is more sensitive to air and cold liquids. This is usually resolved completely in 6 weeks.

Prophylaxis is recommended every 6 months (twice a year) as a preventative measure, but can be recommended every 3-4 months for people who have a high risk for periodontal (gum) disease.
